Party Games
No prep, no purchases, no equipment to lug around — just a few things you've already got.
You've sorted the venue, the drinks, the theme and the bride's outfit — congratulations, that was the easy part. Now you've got to actually entertain a room full of hens, half of whom you've never met, for several hours straight. These hens party games are exactly what you need.
Here are five tried-and-tested games that need almost nothing you don't already have lying around the house, and every one of them works even better with a topless waiter roped in to help run it. Best of all, none of them require a big shopping trip — a quick stop at the supermarket covers the lot.
You'll need: a few rolls of toilet paper.
Split into two teams and pick a "model" from each — traditionally the bride is one of them, unless you've got a topless waiter on hand to volunteer instead. Give each team 5–10 minutes to wrap, drape and decorate their model into the most elaborate wedding dress (or mummy) their toilet roll supplies allow. When the timer goes, all wrapping stops immediately. Take plenty of photos and let the group vote on a winner.
If you've booked a topless waiter, use him as one team's model and the bride as the other's — the results are consistently hilarious, and the bride gets to judge rather than be judged for once. If you'd rather skip the toilet paper altogether and go straight for the real thing, our mobile life drawing class covers similar ground with a lot more detail.
You'll need: cucumbers, play dough or pastry dough (plus a few plastic knives if you're going the cucumber route).
Hand everyone a lump of dough or a cucumber and have them sculpt the most impressive — or ridiculous — anatomy they can manage. Keep creations hidden until a big reveal at the end. If you've got a topless waiter or life drawing model there, let him judge the entries (or offer his professional opinion on accuracy). A few small prizes for the best effort go down well.
If anyone in the group actually knows their way around a kitchen, the pastry version doubles as a genuinely funny pre-dinner snack once it's out of the oven — just maybe don't mention what it's shaped like to anyone outside the group.
You'll need: a pen, some scraps of paper, and a bowl.
Everyone writes a cheeky word or phrase on a slip of paper, signs their name, and drops it in the bowl. The bride pulls one out and acts it out for the group (the person who wrote it stays quiet). Set a time limit — 30 to 60 seconds works well. Guess correctly and you can nominate someone to drink; if nobody guesses in time, the bride drinks instead. If it feels like too much pressure on one person, rotate who's acting each round instead.
This is a good one to hand over to a topless waiter if you've got one there — having him act out a few rounds usually gets the loudest reaction of the night, and it takes the pressure off the bride for a round or two.
You'll need: balloons (under-inflated ones are funnier — they're harder to pop).
Split into pairs, give each pair a balloon, and have them try to pop it by squashing it between them using only body positioning — no hands, nails or teeth allowed. Run it one pair at a time so everyone else can watch (and film). Best done once a few drinks are in and the self-consciousness has worn off. First pair to pop their balloon wins a point for their team; losing team drinks.
Keep it light — the fun is in the awkward improvising, not in anyone feeling put on the spot. Letting people choose their own partner rather than assigning pairs usually keeps it comfortable for everyone.
You'll need: bananas or cucumbers, and a pack of condoms (flavoured ones are always a hit).
Split into two teams and race to see who can get a condom onto their banana or cucumber fastest — with one catch: no hands allowed. Watching everyone improvise a technique is most of the fun, and you'll be surprised who turns out to have a hidden talent.
Run it as a knockout — winner from each round goes again — and you'll have a clear, genuinely funny champion crowned by the end of the night.
Every one of these games gets funnier with a topless waiter helping run it — pouring drinks, keeping score, or volunteering as tribute when a game calls for a model. It costs a lot less split across the group than you'd think, and it's the easiest way to guarantee nobody's standing around wondering what happens next. Check our topless waiter rates to see how affordable it is once split between the group.
